Simon bar Giora, one of the leaders of the Jewish Revolt. It broke out under the rule of the Roman emperor Nero, who dispatched to Judea his trusted general Vespasian, an experienced commander who had fought throughout the empire’s western provinces. Having previously subdued a German revolt, Vespasian understood how to deal with rebellions. He began his campaign with a scorched-earth policy in the north, Roman troops destroed entire Jewish towns in the Galilee as well as the fortress of Gamla in the Golan Heights, where approximately 5000 Jews took their own lives rather than fall into captivity.
